Food Security and Livelihood
HAPDA’s Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) interventions aim to strengthen community resilience, enhance household income, and ensure sustainable access to adequate and nutritious food. Guided by the principles of self-reliance, inclusion, and environmental sustainability, HAPDA supports vulnerable households in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia to rebuild their livelihoods, diversify income sources, and withstand shocks caused by climate change, conflict, and economic instability.
Our interventions are designed to address both the immediate and long-term needs of communities — from emergency food assistance to sustainable agricultural development and market-based livelihood restoration.
Key areas of intervention include:
Climate-Smart Agriculture and Food Production:
HAPDA promotes the adoption of climate-resilient farming practices such as drought-tolerant crop varieties, conservation agriculture, efficient irrigation technologies, and integrated pest management. We provide smallholder farmers with training, seeds, tools, and inputs to improve productivity and adapt to changing climatic conditions.Livestock Development and Pastoral Support:
In pastoral and agro-pastoral communities, HAPDA supports livestock vaccination, restocking, fodder production, and water access for animals. Our programs also include the establishment of livestock markets and the promotion of animal health services to sustain pastoral livelihoods and reduce vulnerability to drought.Income Generation and Enterprise Development:
HAPDA facilitates the creation of alternative income sources through skills training, small business incubation, and access to microfinance and savings groups. Special focus is given to empowering women and youth through vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and value chain development in agriculture and small-scale trade.Nutrition and Food Utilization:
Recognizing the close link between food security and nutrition, HAPDA integrates nutrition-sensitive programming — including awareness campaigns on dietary diversity, food preparation, and child feeding practices. We work with community health structures to prevent and manage malnutrition, especially among children under five and pregnant or lactating women.Community Resilience and Disaster Preparedness:
HAPDA strengthens community capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from shocks such as droughts and floods. We facilitate the development of community-based early warning systems, water harvesting structures, and sustainable natural resource management to reduce vulnerability and enhance adaptive capacity.Emergency Food Assistance:
In times of crisis, HAPDA provides life-saving food assistance and cash transfers to households facing acute food shortages. These interventions are coordinated with local authorities and humanitarian partners to ensure efficiency, dignity, and accountability.
