About HAPDA

Humanitarian Action for Peace and Development in Africa (HAPDA) is a regional non-profit organization established in January 2014, with operations spanning Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia. It was founded by a dynamic group of committed youth and professionals driven by a shared vision of promoting peace, harmony, and community resilience across the region.

HAPDA has established a strong presence through active offices located in Nairobi, Wajir, Lamu, Tana River, Kisii, Marsabit, and Mandera in Kenya; Moyale and Jigjiga in Ethiopia; and Mogadishu in Somalia. The organization is supported by a team of dedicated and experienced professionals who uphold the values of integrity, accountability, and transparency in all their engagements.

Through its inclusive approach, HAPDA brings together young people and diverse stakeholders—transcending religious, cultural, ethnic, political, educational, and social boundaries—to promote unity, social cohesion, and sustainable development within communities.

Our Vision

To promote inclusive and harmonious communities across Africa, where youth, women, and marginalized groups champion peace, development, and environmental stewardship.

Our Mission

HAPDA’s mission is to provide accurate information, skills, and support to vulnerable communities in fragile regions, helping them escape cycles of conflict, oppression, and marginalization, while transforming them into agents of peace, resilience, and development.

Motivation for HAPDA Formation

HAPDA was formed in response to the long-standing conflict and insecurity along the Kenya–Ethiopia–Somalia border. The region is marked by armed conflict, violent extremism, political instability, and resource competition. Communities face deep-rooted challenges, including radicalization, livelihood insecurity, and forced migration.

In addition, climate change has intensified vulnerabilities, with erratic weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and diminishing water and pasture resources threatening pastoralist communities. These dynamics exacerbate displacement, poverty, and inter-clan violence.

HAPDA exists to respond to these challenges by strengthening resilience, promoting peace, and advancing inclusive socio-economic transformation

Uniting for Peace and Sustainable Change

How We Make a Difference

Food Security and Livelihood

HAPDA’s Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) interventions aim to strengthen community resilience, enhance household income, and ensure sustainable access to adequate and nutritious food. Guided by the principles of self-reliance, inclusion, and environmental sustainability, HAPDA supports vulnerable households in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia to rebuild their livelihoods, diversify income sources, and withstand shocks caused by climate change, conflict, and economic instability.

Gender Based Violence (GBV)

HAPDA recognizes that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains one of the most critical challenges undermining the safety, dignity, and rights of women, girls, and other vulnerable groups across the Horn of Africa. Rooted in unequal power relations, harmful social norms, and persistent gender inequalities, GBV has far-reaching impacts on individuals, families, and communities.

Conflict Resolution & Peace Building

HAPDA recognizes that sustainable peace and development can only be achieved in societies where people coexist harmoniously, respect diversity, and collectively work toward shared prosperity. Operating in regions frequently affected by conflict, resource competition, and intercommunal tensions, HAPDA places peacebuilding and social cohesion at the heart of its mission. Our interventions aim to prevent violence, strengthen community resilience, and foster peaceful coexistence through inclusive dialogue, capacity building, and participatory development.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Access to safe water, adequate sanitation, and proper hygiene practices remains a critical challenge across many communities in the Horn of Africa. In recognition of this, the Humanitarian Action for Peace and Development in Africa (HAPDA) implements integrated WASH interventions aimed at improving community health, reducing vulnerability to waterborne diseases, and enhancing resilience in fragile and underserved environments.

Health and Nutrition

HAPDA works to improve the health and nutrition of vulnerable populations in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia by promoting equitable access to quality healthcare, preventing disease, and addressing malnutrition. Its integrated approach combines preventive and curative services while building community and health system capacity for sustainable, people-centered outcomes.

Education & Child Protection

HAPDA believes that every child has the right to quality education, safety, and a nurturing environment that enables them to reach their full potential. Across Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia, the organization implements integrated education and child protection programs designed to improve access to learning opportunities, safeguard children from abuse and neglect, and empower communities to uphold children’s rights.

Conflict & Peacebuilding

At HAPDA, we recognize that sustainable development can only thrive in an environment of peace, mutual respect, and social cohesion. Operating in regions frequently affected by conflict, displacement, and resource-based tensions, HAPDA’s Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding interventions are designed to foster harmony, dialogue, and coexistence among communities across Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
